The Preemie Growth Project Inc. (a non-profit organization whose mission is to benefit premature infants) is conducting a preliminary study to determine if premature infants can "catch up" in two-to-six months using early trace-mineral supplementation. The study builds on established research by a host of noted authorities, and was initiated because two 4-lb preemie twins "caught up" by four months actual/two months adjusted, at a cost of only $20 per child.
Expected results from the study are increased survival rates, and earlier-than-expected achievement of growth and developmental milestones. Part of the study’s hypothesis is that the earlier the intervention, the better the results.
Eligible infants are those who were born prior to 37 weeks’ gestation or born at less than 2,500g; have been released from hospital care; are under one year of age at time of entrance into study; and living in either Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Washtenaw or Livingston Counties.
NOTE: Infants born outside of these areas can be accepted into the study, but parents will be required to involve their family pediatrician in data collection, and additional support services won’t be available to participants living outside of the southeastern Michigan area.
Participants will be accepted into the study beginning in March 2010. The study will run between three and five years.
The cost to participants is zero.
